Summary: Firefly Lane, by Kristin Hannah, is a novel about relationships; not only about the 30 year friendship between two completely different women, but also a book about mother/daughter relationships. Total opposites, these eighth grade girls meet in the 1970’s, when beautiful and popular Tully Hart moves next door to ordinary middle-class Kate Mularkey. Their lives become intertwined even though ambitious Tully goes on to become a first-class journalist while Kate aspires to nothing more than to be a wife and mother. Their friendship is tested when Kate’s husband falls for Tully and is further strained by the adoration shown her by Kate’s daughter, Marah. Due to the use of drugs and alcohol Tully has had a painful history with her own mother. She consequently cherishes her relationship with this surrogate daughter, despite the jealousy and alienation the transfer of affections engenders. The tension threatening the thirty year friendship between Kate and Tully escalates and concludes the story on a highly emotional level.
