Additionally, $1,000 of the Koch grant will be used as a partial match for funds from a grant that the Library has received
from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The Gates Foundation will give the Library $29,250 to buy and maintain computers, IF
the Library raises $17,550 in matching funds. The grant from the Dorothy Koch Family Foundation, with support from the BCPL Foundation,
launches the Library's efforts to raise the matching funds.
This is the third grant the Library has received from the Koch Family Foundation. "We urge other Brown County residents to support the Library through
giving to the BCPL Foundation, volunteering their time, and voting for the library levy. Investing in libraries yields great returns,'
said Charles Koch, head of the Koch Foundation. "Of course, libraries bring the world of books to us all. But they're much more. They're
a significant partner with the educational system, offering reading programs for preschoolers, and providing homework help for students,
and support for teachers and home schoolers."
Our libraries provide important community services, from assisting job seekers to delivering resources to day care and senior centers,
to offering meeting rooms for public use. For many Brown County residents, libraries are also the only place to access a computer and the
Internet. "Libraries offer programs for learning and having fun together as a community. It's for everyone, and it's all free. We need to support our
libraries however we are able, and we have opportunites right now by voting yes for the levy and by contributing to the Library Foundation," Koch concluded.
"The Library appreciates the support from the Koch Family Foundatin," said Lynn A. Harden, Brown County Public Library Director. "This grant will help us
buy books, DVDs, college and career resource materials, as well as computers, which the community especially needs in these difficult economic times."
"Libraries have been hit with a huge 31% cut in state funding this year, while demand for our services increases. We really need support from the Brown
County community to maintain essential services for our citizens," Harden continued. "Our branches are now closed three or four days a week.
Donations such as this are wonderful for short-term needs, but passing the library levy in November is crucial to keeping local libraries open in the
future."
The Dorothy Koch Family Foundation honors Dorothy Kautz Koch and her lifelong commitment to education. Mrs. Koch emphasized education, both
in raising her four children and in her career as an elementary school teacher. Mrs. Koch, who lived with her husband near Georgetown, has
family ties to Brown County that date to the middle of the 1800s.
Founded in 1997, the Brown County Public Library Foundation is a group of local citizens who help raise funds for the Library and support its programs.
Current projects include support of library services to the homebound, and raising matching funds for the Gates Foundation grant. The BCPL
Foundation is dedicated to developing long-term sustainability for the Library through memorial gifts, annuities, bequests, and other contributions.
