A Change of Library Hours
Beginning Monday, December 31, 2007, all branches of the Brown County Public Library will change the hours that they are open to the public. These changes are a result of a decrease in state funding to Ohio's public libraries.
The State budget that went into effect on July 1, 2005 froze library funding at the previous year's levels. This same budget included tax reforms that reduce the personal income tax by 4.2% each year for five years. And, since public library funding comes directly from the personal income tax, library funding is also subject to these annual reductions.
The Brown County Public Library is coping with these budget reductions in a number of ways, from deferring maintenance issues such as sealing and striping the parking lots, to not replacing or repairing computers when they break. We have also had to impose a reduction in staff hours and wages, which has made it necessary to reduce the hours that we are open to the public in order to provide adequate staffing during those hours.
Our outlook on the situation is positive; we see these reductions as temporary measures until funding levels improve. In the meantime, we are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and we thank you for your continued patronage of the Brown County Public Library.
