BCPL needs your help!
URGENT: Part of the state budget that was passed by the Senate and House is now on the way to the Governor to sign into law (House Bill 96). includes a harmful, expensive, and unnecessary requirement that public libraries move any materials related to sexual orientation or gender identity to areas that are not primarily visible to anyone under 18.
Families know best. At BCPL we feel that families—not the state or libraries—should determine what materials are appropriate for their children. BCPL already has policies in place to support families in making decisions concerning library materials.
Why does this matter? It limits your freedom to choose what’s right for your family.
It’s expensive. Reclassifying books, redesigning spaces, retraining staff and buying new equipment will cost millions of dollars. The budget does not provide funding for this work.
In fact, it cuts funding. Essential programs and services could be reduced to pay for this policy.
It raises serious legal concerns about censorship and access to information. It’s vague and confusing, making it hard for libraries to apply the law fairly or consistently.
HOW TO HELP:
This was not in Governor Mike DeWine’s plan, but he has the power to stop it.
Call and email the Governor today and respectfully urge him to veto this provision related to library materials.
